Here are answers to some frequently asked questions about linking AirPods to Apple’s Find My iPhone app:

Do AirPods need to be connected to use Find My?

No, AirPods can be located via Find My even when disconnected, offline, or with dead battery thanks to Apple’s vast tracking network. However, Bluetooth provides more accurate live location tracking when in range.

Can you track AirPods that aren’t yours/assigned to your iCloud account?

No. You can only track AirPods connected to your personal iCloud account and paired to devices registered to it for Find My functionality. AirPods sync exclusively to one iCloud account.

Why can’t I enable Find My AirPods from the Bluetooth menu?

As of iOS 15, the option to toggle Find My on and off for AirPods was relocated to the Find My app itself under devices settings instead of Bluetooth.

Do AirPods work with Find My Mac?

While you can’t directly link AirPods to Find My Mac, you can use Find My on any iPhone signed into the same iCloud account used on your Mac. All connected devices show in Find My regardless what device you’re viewing it from.

Can you track AirPods case and earbuds separately?

Unfortunately Find My doesn’t differentiate between tracking signals from the AirPods case versus individual earbud pieces once popped open. It’s designed for whole product tracking.
